UFAC’s Dr Andrew Pine presented at the SFT Ruminant Conference, exploring the evolving role of fatty acids in dairy nutrition, performance and lactation strategy.

UFAC’s Dr Andrew Pine presented at last week’s SFT Ruminant Conference, contributing to a strong line-up of speakers across the day.
Andrew’s presentation explored how the industry’s understanding of fat nutrition in ruminants has evolved over the past century. From limited early research, the focus has shifted significantly in recent years towards the role of individual fatty acids and how they influence production, metabolism and overall system performance.
A key part of the session focused on the growing importance of fatty acid composition, rather than fat inclusion alone. In particular, Andrew discussed the potential role of increasing oleic acid within the diet and how this may support performance outcomes under commercial conditions.
He also shared practical recommendations around target fatty acid ratios at different stages of lactation, linking nutritional strategy more closely to cow requirements and production goals.
The session reflected the wider shift within the industry towards a more precise, science-led approach to energy nutrition, moving beyond traditional assumptions about fat supplementation.
