Feed to boost milk output.

UFAC press release: December, 2007

Dairy farmers now have the potential to increase returns by nearly £10,000 per 100 cows per year, if they adjust their feeding regimes.
"For the first time in years favourable milk prices mean that it makes economic sense to boost output," says Don Rattenbury of Newmarket-based feed supplement specialists Ufac-UK.

He points out that although feed prices have increased and other costs - such as interest rates, fuel and insurance - have grown, the bottom line is that there is now a margin to be made. "Dairy farmers should do all they can to exploit the current situation."

To help them do so Ufac-UK has launched a new product, Xtra-Milk, an energy supplement designed to stimulate milk output. Milk production depends upon energy availability, but there are limits to the supply of energy from forage and starchy materials. It is now recognised that more use could be made of specialised fat products, particularly this year with silage MEs down in many samples.

Ufac has particular expertise in this area and Xtra-Milk is unique in that it contains a range of oils, rather than a single source, giving a product that contains valuable omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which stimulate microbial activity in the rumen, helping to release more of the energy from forage and starchy foods.

Adding Xtra-Milk to the diet can boost milk production by over 2 litres per cow per day at a cost of around 26 p. However, this milk will be worth 50p-60p - generating 100 per cent return, in addition to the health and fertility benefits imparted by the omega-3 fatty acids. The additional milk produced could be worth £100 per annum for every cow in the herd, explained Mr Rattenbury.
