Omega-3s tip the balance at tupping.UFAC press release: June, 2007The importance of feeding sheep a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids around tupping has been highlighted by a leading nutritionist. Omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (decosahexaenoic acid) are vital for producing active semen in rams and hormones and follicles in ewes for embryo production, says Francis Palmer, of Newmarket-based supplements manufacturer, Ufac (UK) Ltd. EPA and DHA are essential for embryo survival in the uterus before implantation and further development of the embryo. A ram needs to produce plenty of virile semen that will combine with good quality ova from the ewe to produce vigorous embryos. The ewes need to be in good condition so that these embryos implant and grow on to become lambs which are full of vitality from birth. Following research into the physiology of producing top-quality embryos Ufac has produced the Sheep Breeder Tupping Bucket with a specially-formulated supplement designed to be used before and after tupping. As well as EPA and DHA, it contains energy as glucose to keep the ram and ewe in good condition, vitamin E and a high level of selenium to ensure that the energy process in the blood is maintained at an optimum level.
