Feed Galaxy to Improve fertility.

Dairy cow fertility has declined rapidly over the last decade. The calving interval for UK herds as recorded by CIS and NMR has increased from 398 days in 1998 to 427 days in 2008. The graph below shows the data for the last 5 years and while milk yield has reached a plateau, calving interval continues to increase.

Recent figures from University of Bristol Veterinary School calculate the loss at that level of Calving interval to be £5.60 per day. Reducing Calving Interval by 30 days is then worth £168 per cow. This equates to a saving of 2.4ppl for a herd selling 7000 litres per cow.

Two of the factors in reducing calving interval are:

  • Cows need to start ovarian activity earlier.
  • Conception rates need to be increased.

This improvement in reproductive performance has a potential benefit of £62 per cow. Trials have shown an increase in milk yield of over 3 litres per cow per day giving an extra 1000 litres in a 305 day lactation worth an extra £220 per cow.
